It’s a common fear. As soon as your windows are washed, it will rain. Your windows will be dirty again.
Fear no more. Rain does not dirty your windows. Dirt does. It’s all about the TDS.
What’s TDS?
Total Dissolved Solids. The TDS measures the amount of other materials that are dissolved in water. Minerals, salts, metals, wood dust – anything that is not the hydrogen and oxygen that make up water. All this extra “junk” is what dirties your windows.
How? These solids cause spotting on your glass. Rainwater itself has a very low TDS, usually around 10 parts per million. For comparison, your tap water TDS is usually 140-400 ppm. Tap water will spot windows.
This means rainwater alone will not cause spotting. However, if dirt is already present when it rains, the rain moves the dirt around and focuses it into a spot.
What’s the solution?
Clean windows. If rain arrives and there’s no dirt on your windows to mix with it, you will have sheeting action rather than spotting. The more frequently you clean the glass, the less the rain will spot. There will be no dirt to mix with the rain and form spots.
Clean windows will actually benefit from the occasional rain. The rainwater will help keep them rinsed clean. If dirt accumulates, this is when the rain will result in dirt spotting.
